Crabbing went well, with four Dungeness and four rock. We’ve always thrown rock crabs back but these were such a good size, Nick decided to keep them. They are just as tasty, if a a bit harder to crack and with less meat in the body.

Look at the size of these claws!

The Squalicum Yacht Club gathering turned out to be small…just five boats. We gathered on the shore at English Camp for happy hour on Thursday, and dinner yesterday. This was our very first yacht club activity…ever…and it was nice to meet new people and learn more about how this club operates.

As I mentioned, the wind blew hard all night on Wednesday. It continued all day Thursday but has finally calmed. Two boats in the SYC dragged anchor. Lessons learned.

A highlight yesterday was an awesome barred owl sighting before a few of us hiked Young Hill. As usual, it was the fierce chirping of a robin that alerted us to this owl’s presence…right next to the trail!

We took the dinghy through Mosquito Pass yesterday afternoon to take a walk around Roche Harbor. Talked to a couple aboard a Cutwater named Touch of Grey. Indeed, the boat was named after the song…and spelled the Grateful Dead way.

This weekend is San Juan Island National Historical Park Encampment 2024. This is a annual reenactment event and we hope to spend a little time there before we leave today.

Our plan is to depart a later this morning, timing both the current in Spieden Channel and the low tide for entering Fisherman Bay.
