Before you get too excited…it was a carcass.

You may have read about the deceased fin (probably) whale that entered the Port of Tacoma Monday on the bow of a container ship. I read a little about it and knew the plan was to tow the carcass to McNeil Island where a necropsy will be performed and where the whale will be left to decompose naturally.

I happened to look up yesterday and saw a tug with a strange-looking tow. Yep, the dead (60+ feet long!) whale.

We’ve seen so many whales lately in Commencement Bay, including this group of Orcas a couple of weeks ago:

One of them swam in between the shore and the old Point Ruston ferry, right in front of our window.

Very fun and exciting, except I wish I had seen the fin whale alive!

After spending a few weeks at home, we’re loading up and heading back out on the water for a few weeks. This is basically the plan to go north to Chatterbox Falls…the plan we scrapped earlier in order to deal with our boat refrigerator.

Hope to be bobbing on a mooring buoy at Spencer Spit (Lopez Island) by this afternoon…
